An diesem Dienstag (9.1.) hat die Dakar auch ihren ersten Todesfall zu beklagen.
Der südafrikanische Motorradfahrer Elmer Symons stürzte bei seiner ersten Dakar bei Kilometer 142 auf seiner KTM. Laut Veranstalter war der Rettungshubschrauber bereits acht Minuten später an der Unfallstelle. Die Ärzte konnten allerdings nur noch den Tod des 29-Jährigen feststellen. Es ist der 54. Todesfall in der Geschichte der Rallye.
